Literature speaks for an imperishable universal tradition beyond temporal boundaries. The department of English, Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 1954.

We, the department of English, besides giving our students structured lessons based on the academic syllabi also emphasize in connecting them with life at large. We provide ground for the holistic development and help them to understand the complexities of life by organizing lectures, workshops and such other events for our students. We prepare them morally, emotionally and professionally to indulge and deal with life beyond classroom and to achieve a good career opportunity. Apart from skill enhancement, the department works in line with NEP 2020 to provide them exposure so that students can paint their creative canvases to reflect positive vibrant colours upholding the harmonious and sustainable existence of humanity.

Interdisciplinary practices and activities are promoted in the department. The department has been organizing seminars, workshops and lecture series for students incorporating and in collaboration with other departments of the college. Poetry Festival organized by the department is an innovative practice that allows students as well as faculty members of ours and other colleges as well for the better understanding of creative writing and recitation. It also gives platform to the students to express their ideas or philosophies on different issues. Our literary club ‘Coliseum’ allows students to organize and participate in various events like play, debate, essay writing, paper writing, celebrating birthdays of authors etc. The club is being operated by the students under the mentorship of teachers. We are also working on a departmental magazine and would inaugurate it soon.

In this age of globalization, the world is heading towards a universal citizenship. English Language provides the common platform for communication to its universal citizens. The Indian students living in the global village, find English language a pre-requisite, to meet up with their professional, social and cultural connectivity. On the other hand, India with its multilingual identity, finds English language an effective tool of communication. Keeping this objective in mind, the Department of English, V.K.M., started a Spoken English Course recommended and financed by U.G.C. and approved by B.H.U in the year 2009. We run three ‘six-month’ courses say: ‘Certificate Course’, ‘Diploma Course’ and ‘Advanced Diploma Course’ in Spoken English for students of various disciplines of ours and other colleges also. It is designed with an objective to attain proficiency in spoken and written English language.
